Ice Dreams Showcase (2006)
On March 3rd, 2006, students from Bayview Community School in Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia celebrated their outdoor club, outdoor curling rink, and the great outdoors in general with staff from Go for Green and N.S. Health Promotion and Protection. This winter, Selena Davidson, a physical education teacher at Bayview, and students from the school started an outdoor club to promote outdoor active living and fun throughout the winter season.
The first task for the club was to fundraise and purchase a complete class set of snowshoes and equipment needed to build an outdoor curling rink! The school has a small nature trail in the back of the property, allowing quick exploratory walks through the wooded area and a large playing field where students can develop their snowshoeing skills. A Physical Activity Grant from N.S. Health Promotion and Protection helped with the purchase of the equipment.
The curling rink was built on the infield of the baseball diamond by grade 9 students; Dana Hirtle, Jesse Hamm, Chris Hiltz, and Josh Corkum, shown here happily displaying their creation. The rink is not a full-scale curling rink, but instead is scaled down (10’ x 25’) and uses hockey pucks for curling stones and tempura paint for the “house”.
Grade 9 students at Bayview help with the operation of the club by providing supervision, instruction and mentorship for the grade 5 students at the school. Congratulations to the students and staff of Bayview Community School for initiating such a creative, engaging and successful outdoor activity program…one surely worthy of showcasing!
IceDreams is a program of Go for Green that promotes and celebrates the building and use of outdoor ice rinks.
